Dr. Karim Keshavjee with the support of Intel Canada has published a white paper to stimulate discussion on strategies to increase the deployment of electronic medical records in Ontario. As Canada's largest province with the greatest number of physicians, Ontario has supported adoption of EMR systems by providing incentives and tying the funding incentives to primary care and changing models of medical practice. However, is this the right approach? Will this get Ontario physicians and the healthcare system where it needs to be with regard to the uptake and adoption of EMRs? What about funding for specialists who are currently excluded from receiving funding incentives to adopt EMR?
This document is a very interesting read and raises some important questions that are applicable irrespective of province. There are some basic principles that are well thought out to encourage adoption of EMRs plus some specific recommendations.
